Better grab some coffee or tea because this is a long post. If you’re interested in Kiev type sky noises, it’s worth your time.

The most famous metallic sound video on the internet with 1.6 million hits is the Kiev video from this summer. Since I started this blog one of the top search terms is “strange sounds in russia”. The sounds in this video have a big scare factor just like the War of the Worlds tripod sounds. Many commenters like to claim that it’s the “angels of the apocalypse” sounding their trumpets. Some think it’s a nearby dam that’s being stressed by high waters. Another theory is that it’s the venting of poisonous gases  from nuclear testing in underground tunnels. The list goes on and all of these explanation are pure speculation.

I will not be posting metallic sound videos anymore unless I feel that they offer us something different from the above. I think the video below is a mix of the Kiev sound and other sounds that I will outline after the jump.

Also, check out why this video above definitely has all of the characteristics of a hoax by reading my post about fakes. Let’s start by pointing out an admitted hoax similar to the Kiev sound.

More after the jump.

This “strange sound” video below called Strange Sound in L’viv was inspired by the Kiev video. I think it shows how easy it is to make these strange metallic sound videos.

Below is an investigative news segment done by a Ukranian news station. Although it’s in Russian, there is a part where they’re obviously asking people if they heard anything. The reactions are definitely no, and in some cases they laugh. Probably at the volume that this sound was heard in the video, most of the residents would have heard something. If you look at the Kiev video there is a part where you can see some young people walking. They don’t look like they’re hearing anything to me and seem to be holding a conversation.

I think the metallic noise in the videos are made up of many sounds. Whoever created it is brilliant in the way they’ve combined all of the sounds. In doing a bit of searching I’ve discovered that thousands of sound clips are available for purchase that feature eerie metallic scraping. Here are just two examples, listen to them here and here. See any similarities? While the sounds aren’t exact you get the idea. Now listen to the 1954 sound of godzilla. It’s at the beginning of the clip.

And of course the war of the Worlds sound below.

It is possible that I’m wrong. We will never know as long as the people that created this video never admit it’s a hoax. As far as the strange sound phenomenon goes I think the metallic scraping sounds are the least convincing and yet the most believed on the internet. Perhaps one day we’ll find one of these videos that really impresses us.

And now, an example of a convincing video. The Kiev type videos currently do not impress me, but this one below does…. it has all the markings of a real sound event. This one truly creeps me out. Filmed in 2009 in Ohio (which by the way seems to have lots of sky sound activity) the description is simply:

This is about 25 minutes after the noises started…. these rumbling pulses are so intense, you can feel them in the ground, but the sound seems to come from the sky above the Ohio river.

Pretty weird, huh.
